McCall. To her joy, they both listened. Josie disappeared and McCall stopped short. Unfortunately, he didn't shut up.
"You said we had to get going. Now here you are sitting in the hallway. What's the matter? Are you sick?"
The intruder in their rooms had to have heard them talking. D.J. put her finger to her lips and McCall stopped yapping. In the ensuing silence, the latch clicked on the door to McCall's room. D.J. turned toward the sound, coming up on her knees and putting the gun out in front of her in a straight-arm stance.
"Police," she shouted. "Throw out your weapon and show me your hands."
In answer to her command the door slammed shut. D.J. got to her feet and leaned back against the wall. She felt more in control on her feet than on her knees, but she still had no idea what to do. She and McCall were in the hall. Someone with a very big gun, who wanted to kill them, inhabited their rooms, and the police were nowhere in sight.
"What's going on?" McCall's voice right next to her ear made D.J. yelp in fright.
She turned her head to glare at him. "Don't do that. Why didn't you stay out of the way?" She glanced at the door with the hole in it. "Jeez, McCall, you walked right through the line of fire. Are you a total idiot?"
"I didn't think so until you started telling me I was every other minute."
The sound of breaking glass shattered any attempt at conversation, and D.J. shoved McCall
